I was asked to present to K-4th graders at St Pius School in New Orleans on how math applies to apparel design. I was a little taken aback, and I really didn't see how they would be able to relate and find what I do interesting...then I remembered a youtube sensation my friend showed me about a 10 year old designer named Cecilia Cassini (look her up, she's adorable). I found a today show segment that introduced her, and I immediately got their attention (apparently she designed for an actor on a Disney Channel show, called Shake it up! so they were super impressed and engaged) We talked about how A LOT of math goes into each of my pieces - from shapes, to flat patterns, to all sorts of measurements. I even met an up and coming designer, another Cecilia, oddly enough, and she had MANY ideas of how to create new pieces to add to my current collection :) Might have a new intern this summer, who knows ;) I captured a few photos to share, and overall had a great time, and I was extremely surprised how engaged the kids were! video to come...
